Google Warrning - Sunday 7th March
After our advertising networks were flooded with viruses (again) we have removed all ads temporarily until we can be sure the threats have been removed. Unfortunately this was too late to stop Google blacklisting our website. We have spoken with Google and they have re-evaluated the site by saying "Status of the latest badware review for this site: A review for this site has finished. The site was found clean. The badware warnings from web search are being removed. Please note that it can take some time for this change to propagate.".
We are very grateful to our users for notifying us of these issues when they find them but it is very difficult to locate 1 rogue ad in several hundred thousand without header data. If there are any semi-tech minded users out there who would like to help more they can install the Firefoc plugin "Tamper Data" (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/966) and send us the text log if you get any dodgy ads (just paste the info into the email form). Thank you!
Return of the box...dun dun dah - Sunday 13th December
We have put back the most popular TV links box on the home page because our American users were complaining that they had difficulty keeping up with shows on Hulu, Fox and other network sites without it. So, it's back! You may notice a slowdown slightly in our search times as removing the top links box was one of the ways we were reducing load on our database. We'll see how it gets on with it back :).
Site Upgrades - Monday 16th November
STC is excited to announce that some serious upgrades to the site search engine code will almost halve query times when searching through our links database. This is the result of some rewriting of the backend software so that our database is under less load and therefore quicker to respond to requests.
STC Community Forum Now Closed - Friday 13th November
The STC administration have today taken the sad decision to close the community forums permanently. This decision was taken after a number of incidents where new users, protected by anonymous proxies and suspected to be operatives of our commercial competitors, posted controversial requests regarding copyrighted content.
STC's forum has been open since the day that the website was opened (October 1 2007) and in that time it has been staffed by volunteer moderators and admin. The staff have done a remarkable job and our deepest thanks go out to them for their years of service, without you SurfTheChannel would not be what it is today. To the members we also thank you from the bottom of our hearts making the community what it was - a happy, friendly and welcoming place to talk about anything under the sun.
From now on STC will send out regular newsletters and make announcements via the site to keep you up to date with what is going on.
Cancer Research UK Donation Drive Now Over - Wednesday 11th November
For the last few months STC has had a big "you can't ignore this" type banner on the front page encouraging its members to donate to Cancer Research UK whatever they could afford to the extremely worthwile charity. This donation drive is now over and we have raised £222! As promised STC is matching this £222 with £222 to make a total of £444 for Cancer Research UK.
STC has been an avid supporter of the Cancer Research UK charity for over two years now by asking anyone who would like to donate to STC to donate direct to the charity instead. For more information on this worthwhile cause please visit Cancer Research UK and support them with a donation if you can!
